Hip hip hooray at the Hippodrome!

The Cat and the canary, get ready to be spooked!

We love it when we get the chance to see some amazing shows at our local theatre Darlington Hippodrome and there are so many we can’t wait! Firstly coming 17th to 21st March is the Cat and the canary and remembering the film as a child I am looking forward to being frightened all over again! It’s a new adaptation of the murderous mystery, which inspired three classic movies starring the likes of Bob Hope, Honor Blackman and Olivia Hussey. Twenty years after the death of Mr. West, his descendants gather at a remote mansion to learn who will inherit his vast wealth and the hidden family jewels. When the heir is revealed, the heritage hunters turn into prey and a chain of macabre events is set in motion; walls crack open, shadows loom and dark secrets are revealed. Will the heirs dare to face the haunting presence toying with them? When the cat prowls, the flock takes fright… Building on the phenomenal decade-long success of The Agatha Christie Theatre Company, The Classic Thriller Company presents their latest adaptation of this mysterious and turbulent classic. Starring Britt Ekland (The Man with the Golden Gun, The Wicker Man), Dakota Blue Richards (Endeavour, Skins, Beecham House), Mark Jordon (Emmerdale, Casualty), Ben Nealon (Soldier Soldier) and Marti Webb (Blood Brothers, La Cage Aux Folles). I’m also writing the blog for work too (my local library) so I have also been thrilled that lots of shows have literary connections!

Treading the boards from 26th-28th March we have another literary offering with a production of Lady Chatterley’s lover based on the once banned and considered scandalous book by D.H Lawrence. When Clifford Chatterley returns from the war a wounded hero, his young bride Connie does her best to care for him. Neglected and alone, she instigates a love affair with the gamekeeper, Mellors, a relationship that bridges the social divide and challenges convention. In touch, they find simplest of truths. In lust, they risk the greatest of scandals. Lawrence’s most sensual of novels was first published in 1928, but only in 1960 did an unexpurgated version become available, leading to one of the most famous trials of the century. Tender, thoughtful and impassioned, Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the book that changed Britain. TV regular Rupert Hill (Casualty, BBC; Coronation Street, ITV) will star alongside Phoebe Marshall (Witness for the Prosecution, London County Hall). https://www.darlingtonhippodrome.co.uk/whats-on/lady-chatterleys-lover/

Yet another date for the diary is this beautiful show which will be performed from the 12th to 16th May. The Kite Runner, an outstanding and unforgettable theatrical based on Khaled Hosseini’s international bestselling novel, is a haunting tale of friendship spanning cultures and continents and following one man’s journey to confront his past and find redemption. Afghanistan is a country on the verge of war and best friends are about to be torn apart. It’s a beautiful afternoon in Kabul, the skies are full of colour and the streets are full of the excitement of a kite flying tournament, but no one can foresee the terrible incident that will shatter their lives forever. Adapted by Matthew Spangler, based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini and Directed by Giles Croft. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K505vJTc5dA
